Are Tasers Being Overused?
October 31, 2007

By M.J. STEPHEY

Though the Taser has been around for more than 30 years, the brand-name stun gun gained new notoriety last month when Andrew Meyer, a 21-year-old student, scuffled with University of Florida police and uttered his now infamous entreaty "Don't tase me, bro!" — just moments before he, in fact, got tased.

RIGHTS-EUROPE: 'Non-lethal Weapons' Tackle Protests Against Globalisation
October 26, 2007

By Julio Godoy

PARIS - Several European governments are arming their police forces with a new range of "non-lethal weapons" to put down protests against globalisation, and among immigrants.

Governments in France, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, and several other countries have ordered such weapons, or are about to, even though human rights groups are warning that the supposed "non-lethality" of the guns is a myth, and that they actually can kill people.

The most widespread "non-lethal weapon" is the stun gun Taser, that discharges electric shocks. Technically that should only paralyse the person shot at, and cause intense pain.

Unmasking Dubrovka's Mysterious Gas
October 23, 2007

By Nikolaus von Twickel
Staff Writer

The knock-out gas that special forces pumped into Moscow's Dubrovka theater to end the hostage crisis five years ago sent baffled scientists scrambling in their laboratories in the United States and Europe. Now, five years later, the verdict is in. The mysterious substance appears to have been an FSB-made version of carfentanyl, an artificial, opium-like substance that is 10,000 times more potent than morphine and usually used to immobilize large animals. And, as it turns out, the gas wasn't really a gas at all but an aerosol -- tiny particles that float in the air.

By CODY SWITZER

Erie police in spring 2008 expect to be armed with Tasers. Officers plan to have eight of the devices at the police station by then, with all the training completed as well. "This is just another tool to use, along with chemical Mace -- a less-lethal weapon -- to assist arresting a combative subject," Erie police spokesman Lt. Kirk Werner said.
